Another Failure to Get Things Moving in Birkenhead

The site of the former House of Fraser store on Grange Road is currently cleared.

When it bought the site 5 years ago for a reported £2million, Wirral Council planned to build a new Birkenhead Market there. This plan was eventually scrapped in favour of controversial plans that would have put the market into a former Argos site. That plan has now also been shelved with a move to a former TJ Hughes site now moving forward.

Since the market proposals were scrapped, no detailed plans for the site have been put forward. Now, part of the site is set to become a shared building supplies compound for other regeneration projects for at least the next 3 years.

Councillor Stuart Kelly commented: “It is very disappointing that the attractive residential development that this site could offer is again being delayed. We need people living in the centre of Birkenhead if is to be successful. The government are threatening to force the Council to allow building on the green belt if we fail to build enough on excellent brown-field sites such as this.”
