Too Many Poor Care Homes on Wirral

In October 2025 the Care Quality Commission found that twenty-six care homes in Wirral required improvement. Inspections of the homes had led to a fall in the numbers in that situation from 35 in October 2024.  People looking for places for their family members can refer to Wirral Info Bank where there are links to recent reports. This makes it easy to see what the inspectors think of the way they are run and how they  care for their loved ones.

The Care Quality Commission does not work on its own. Our Council provides local monitoring and quality assurance, liaising with the managers of homes to look at their quality of service, set the work in hand to get that improvement under way, and follow that up.

Families need to be confident that services are well run. They need assurances that concerns and complaints are investigated and dealt with’

Over the years the same issues seemed to crop up.  Concerns about poor leadership, staff shortages, safety of residents, the storage of medication, and variations in hygiene have been tackled to improve standards over time.  The Council does not place people in a home ‘requiring improvement’ until they are satisfied improvements requested are in hand and have been implemented.

A recent overhaul of Wirral’s monitoring  service has been introduced.  Phil Gilchrist is seeking the results from that to see that it is working well.  ‘Elderly care home residents and their families should expect that a good standard of care is always provided.’
