Unrealistic Government Housing Targets

The government want Wirral’s housing target to more than double to 1,622 new homes a year.

Under the new targets, the Council will not be able to demonstrate it has a five-year supply of land where homes can be delivered on ‘brownfield’ sites. If the government cannot be persuaded to see sense, then, despite the developments on appropriate sites that are going ahead, green belt land would have to be built on 

Property management company Leverhulme Estates continues to eye up areas of Wirral’s green belt for development. In the company’s ‘vision’ document, it states whilst they support the council’s commitment to brownfield regeneration, “the reality is that there will need to be some release of green belt land.”

If the government plans go ahead, even if the planning committee rejects housing developments on the green belt it will struggle to fight off appeals to the Planning Inspectorate.

Lib Dems reject these unrealistic and damaging plans and support a move to write the minister seeking a more realistic approach to Wirral’s housing targets.
