Lib Dem councillor Allan Brame has welcomed the new food waste collection service which started this week.

“Up until now, food waste has ended up in our green bins, making them smell. It was all then transported by train to Teesside for incineration. Now it can be transferred to an anaerobic digestion plant outside St Asaph, where it is converted into valuable biogas and nutrient-rich fertiliser,” Councillor Brame said.

The Council is purchasing a fleet of new, smaller bin wagons for collecting the food waste. The first nine have been delivered and are operating on the first rounds this week. The remaining six vehicles are expected to arrive in August, which is why some areas are having to wait a few weeks more to start using the service.

The Council has set up a new section of its website with a calendar of bin collections for every road, together with a link for reporting any issues with the new service: Food waste collection | wirral.gov.uk

Under the Environment Act 2021, all councils are now required to provide a separate weekly food waste collection, although some have already been doing this for years. “This was one of the few more enlightened policies introduced by the last Conservative government,” Allan Brame said. “It makes make productive use of stuff we have just been throwing away for years.”
